It all started with the need for an oversized spare tire carrier that solidly established Owl Van in the world of Sprinter van up-fitting for overland travel. The latest iteration of that design uses a proven hinge-based mounting system, easy-to-load basket, and DIY’able instructions.
This hinge-mounted spare tire carrier places an oversized wheel and tire (up to 35 inch) up out of harms way (stock tires are mounted under the rear floor of the van where damage can occur off-road). The “basket” style lower bar makes it easy to place a tire in, and then to secure with the threaded handle. Speaking of the handle, if you’re looking for more carrying capacity, the this Expedition tire carrier is compatible with the Expedition Handle for adding Rotopax Style jugs.
