1989 Airstream Bambi

We can’t think of anything more ’90s then watching pirated tapes on a 19in TV/VHS-Player combo in this Airstream Bambi when it was new. And, while that may have been the pinnacle of camping back then, tastes change and the toll of time had not treated this nearly twenty-year old camper very well.

To bring this Airstream up to speed, we stripped the worn, grungy carpet out, pulled the delaminating oak cabinetry, and removed the stained mouse-fur wall covering. With those detracting features out-of-the-way, the client worked with us to design a fresh interior layout that eliminated excessive closet space, relocated the fridge to the galley side, and transformed the dinette into an inviting lounge.

The original chintzy endcaps were also tossed and we fabricated custom units in their place. These we left raw aluminum, while the rest of the interior walls received a white topcoat to brighten the interior. This is offset by a stainless backsplash, solid surface quartz countertops, and genuine Mahogany cabinetry. The dovetail drawers are inset and feature soft-close, locking RV slides

Intended for park/on-grid use, this Bambi does not have any solar or a large battery bank. For that reason, the fridge is a one-way, 110v unit. A contemporary AC/DC Progressive Dynamics distribution panel brings the Bambi’s electrical systems up to date, while all new lighting and a low-profile air conditioner are noteworthy improvements.

At the rear, the original shower made the remodeling cut, but the toilet is now a new item. For flooring, we’ve stuck with what we feel is the best option for campers, Marmoleum. This environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and easy-to-clean product is not only durable, but adds a nice touch of color to the interior.

Finishing up the Bambi’s interior is a custom lounge that features marine-grade vinyl upholstery from Expression Upholstery by Ken. The modern, built-to-suite, lounge with top stitching and French seams.

Outside, the Bambi received a new awning and the vents for the original three-way fridge were patched. Now that the remnants of ’90s Airstream interior are gone and replaced with quality and contemporary features, this Airstream will be providing years of enjoyment for its owner.
